Mid-back pain can be aggravating, annoying, and (in some cases) debilitating. Because the mid-back, medically termed the thoracic spine, plays an important role in posture and support, any type of pain in the area should be taken seriously. Patients should be aware that three of the most common causes of mid-back pain are:

Muscle-Related Problems

Most cases of mid-back pain are due to muscular issues, such as:

  • Imbalance
  • Tension
  • Strains
  • Sprains
  • Inflammation

The mid-back muscles are some of the largest in the body and play an important role in promoting proper posture. While issues like the ones mentioned above may be not be too serious, the associated pain often is. Suffering patients can seek relief through various non-surgical treatment options, including:

  1. Physical therapy. Stretching and strengthening the muscles of the mid-back improves posture and decreases pain.

  1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs decrease pain and inflammation.

  1. Activity modification. Reducing or stopping activities that involve the use of the mid-back muscles gives the muscles time to heal and regain strength.

Make note that these treatment options should only be prescribed once a diagnosis has been made by a neurosurgeon.

Fractures Due to High-Impact Trauma

Motor vehicle accidents, falls from high levels, and sports injuries can fracture the thoracic vertebrae and produce pain. Generally speaking, the level of experienced pain and severity of the fracture go hand-in-hand. Fractures that disturb the integrity of the spinal canal can produce additional pain in the form of:

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Loss of motor control

Following a high impact traumatic event, patients should seek medical attention immediately, as spine fractures need to be evaluated and treated by a neurosurgeon. Non-surgical treatment usually consists of rest combined with the use of braces and/or medications. Surgical options vary and are determined based on the type and severity of the fracture.

Arthritis as Cause of Mid-Back Pain

Individuals who participate in activities, such as golf, that place excess flexion on the spine are at risk to develop arthritis. When left untreated, the severity of arthritis and associated pain can increase. Non-surgical, conservative treatment options, such as anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, activity modification, and bracing are always tried first. Surgical options are only used when these measures provide little to no relief.
